11.03.23

ARTIST CURATES ARTIST - an exhibition series

ENG: Trafo Kunsthall is happy to announce a new concept in which Trafo Kunsthall (TK) invites artists to explore the role of curators. The aim is to explore various forms of collaborative practices. The artist is invited to produce an exhibition with one or more artists that they relate to professionally, or an artist whose work they wish to promote. The concept is a collaboration between curator, artist and TK and the latter will be providing the experimental exhibition space for artists in various stages of their artistic career. TK will thus be a third party and provide professional guidance, and general assistance with communication and production before, during and after the exhibition period.

#1: MESH - Anna Sofie Mathiasen curates Greg Pope and Arisa Purkpong
11.03 - 23.04

For the first «Kunstner kuraterer kunstner», Oslo-based artist Anna Sofie Mathiasen (DK) has invited artists Greg Pope and Arisa Purkpong to exhibit together. They both work collage-based in a wide range of media. Besides their artistic practices, they both organize screenings and film programs. Among others, Greg Pope is the initiator and organizer of the screening program «The dream that Kicks» at Cinemateket, and Arisa Purkpong is co-organizing and -curating a film seminar on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of "Erstes Internationales Frauenfilmseminar" (1973) at Arsenal (Berlin). Besides their fantastic work, these contributions to the art and film scene were significant in Mathiasen's choice of Pope and Purkpong.

Anna Sofie Mathiasen (b. 1995, Copenhagen) lives and works in Oslo and Copenhagen. Mathiasen works with material from historical archives and personal memory in drawing, collage, installation, film and text in order to create new combinations and new fictions. She has previously exhibited at IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (Valencia, ES), Kunsthall Oslo (NO), Kunstnernes Hus (NO, Oslo), and BO (NO, Oslo). She is represented at Galleri K in Oslo and in 2023 she will participate in O - Overgadens (DK, Copenhagen) INTRO program.

Arisa Purkpong (b. 1995) lives and works in Düsseldorf and Oslo. They studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Trisha Donnelly and Christopher Williams. In their artistic practice, Arisa Purkpong uses the media of video, photography and graphics, which they collage to make publications and installations. Their work has previously been shown at the Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf (2021); Baustelle Schaustelle - Raum für Junge Kunst, Essen/Düsseldorf (2020); Am Ende des Tages, Düsseldorf (2020); KIT - Kunst im Tunnel, Düsseldorf (2019); and Tentacles Gallery, Bangkok (2019). They developed a film screening for the event series Another Eye at Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2022) and the Feminist Film Program (with the support of Claudia von Alemann and Christopher Williams) at Black Box Kino, Düsseldorf (2020).

After dabbling in punk rock bands and absurdist theatre performance, Greg Pope (b. 1960, London) founded film collective 'Situation Cinema' (Brighton, UK, 1986) and 'Loophole Cinema' (London, 1989). Working collaboratively and individually, Pope has made sonic and video installations, paracinema, live art, film, photographic and slide works since 1996. Live work has been performed internationally, including at Tate Britain (London), Issue Project Room (NYC, US), Artscience Centre (Singapore), El Nicho (Mexico City), MoMA (Seoul), BIM, (Buenos Aries), IMA (Brisbane, Australia), Stanford University (San Francisco, US) and at many other locations across the world. Installations have been exhibited at Royal College of Art (London), Kunsthall and Fotogalleri(Oslo) and Galleri Vanntårnet ( Nesodden), among others.

Artist statement Greg Pope: My prime focus has been creating live performances with image, sound and text. I also make installations, exhibitions and photographic work. I work with 16mm film technology, digital image and sound recording, sound creation, field recordings, loudspeakers, microphone technology, slide projectors, shutter/flicker effects and live projection; re-purposing and re-presenting found objects, orphaned machines, and situations. My essential tools are light and dark, silence and noise. I incorporate improvisation and chance as a strategy for creative development. My creative methods connect most easily with the idea of bricolage - construction from a diverse range of available material. I use faces, places and spaces; contemporary and historical incidents, documents and recordings which have a significance or become significant in their presentation.

#2: Hedevig Anker curates Merete Joelsen Aune
20.05 - 02.07
